Description

Restored ceramic teacup manufactured by Moravian potter Gottfried Aust. It measures 2" tall, 2.875" diameter, and 3.5" long across handle.

The brown and yellow glazed pieces are original, and the matte-brown unglazed portions were created by the archaeologists during restoration.

Aust produced two styles of teacups while in Bethabara. One featured no handle, the other, seen here, has a thin handle. The cup was thrown on a potter’s wheel and the body is less than 1/8” thick at the rim. The interior is glazed yellow, the exterior brown. The underside of the foot is unglazed and it was manufactured from white clay. This piece was recovered from Aust Waster Dump #1, indicating it was manufactured between 1763-1771. However, similar fragments were recovered from Aust Waster Dump #2, indicating this style of teacup was being produced as early as 1756.

The object is labeled B4-4-1.
