Description
This unglazed, fluted anthropomorphic pipe is made of reddish-buff colored clay formed in a pipe press, using a brass pipe mold.
The pipe features a fluted body with a human face on the bottom front of the bowl. Unlike the earlier Aust pipes, this one has a ring around the top of the bowl approximately .25” wide. The end in which the pipe stem is inserted terminates in two incised rings approximately .25” wide.
This pipe was recovered from the foundation of B45, the 1786 Christ-Krause Waster Dump #1. Stanley South asserts that this pipe is likely the work of Gottlob Krause. Krause lived in Christ’s former residence, the old Gunsmith Shop, from January 30, 1789 until November 4, 1789 and thus used B45 for a short time. The same style pipes were found during the excavation of Krause’s later residence, the 1782 Brick Krause-Butner House, or Potter’s House. This indicates this pipe style was likely manufactured in Bethabara Pottery between 1789 and 1802, and possibly later. According to the June 10, 1788 Aufseher Collegium, Krause ordered a new set of pipe molds from Christiansbrunn earlier that year.
The pipe is labeled B45-2-2-1 on the inside of the bowl.
Dimensions: 2” long, 1.75” tall, 1” wide
