Description
This is an unglazed, bisque-fired porringer made of reddish-buff clay. This piece was found in fragments and reassembled by the archaeologists. The piece, identified by Stanley South as a “pint cup” was thrown on a potter’s wheel by Gottfried Aust in Bethabara. It features a small foot, incised lines on the exterior, just below the flared rim, and an applied, ribbed handle.
Moravian potters fired pieces in preparation for glazing. Once glazed, they would be fired again. A large number of porringers of this style were recovered from both of Aust’s waster dumps, indicating their susceptibility to breakage. This is likely due to the delicate form. The walls are only 1/8 of an inch thick. The majority of glazed examples featured a green or yellow and green spotted exterior, and red interior.
This porringer was recovered in seventeen pieces from feature B4, Aust Waster Dump #1. The archaeological team reconstructed the piece using Elmer’s Glue. According to Stanley South, Waster Dump #1 was utilized between 1760 and 1771. Sherds were recovered from both waster dumps, indicating this style was produced from 1756-1771.
Item is labeled B4-5-1-8 in black ink.
Dimensions: 3.5” dia. Foot, 5.5” dia. bowl, 6.5” including handle, 2.75” tall
