Description
This very unique pottery shard is marked with a stamp, “JOHN & JOS. BUTNER.” It is the base of an unknown redware object. The exterior is unglazed, while the interior has the remains of dark brown glaze.
John Butner took over the Bethabara pottery in 1802, after the death of Gottlob Krause. John Butner’s son Joseph apprenticed under him and became a master potter around 1850. He took over his father’s business after after his death in 1857. Joseph remained Bethabara’s potter until his death in 1872.
The piece is labeled 31 FS 6 FS#37.
Dimensions: 2.25” wide, 1.625” tall, .5” deep
