Description

This unglazed candlestick is made of mottled buff, red, and dark gray clay. This piece was thrown on a potter’s wheel. Once the basic shape was established, a sharp tool was then used to cut the facets, and to carve out the cup for the candle.

This example was recovered in two pieces, with a third piece missing. Because it was found in Aust’s Waster Dump #2, it is known to have been made between 1756 and 1760. Similar pieces were recovered from his other waster dump, indicating he was producing this style until he moved to Salem in 1771.

It is labeled B51-4-1-6 on the bottom with black ink.

Dimensions: approximately 5.5” tall, 4” dia. base
