Description
This redware lid is reconstructed from eight pieces recovered from the basement of the 1759 Gunsmith Shop/1786-1789 Christ Residence/1789 Krause Residence. It was thrown on a potter’s wheel, has an incised line around edge, with round knob/finial, and a thick rim. It is bisque-fired. Lids of this size and style, like this one, we left unglazed. Unglazed lids likely accompanied cook pots, pans, and milk jugs and pots.
The material recovered in the Gunsmith Shop cellar dates to approximately 1820, indicating it was filled during the time that Christ was still producing pottery. It is therefore likely this is a lid made by him.
This example is marked B20-2-1 in black ink.
Dimensions: 5.5” dia., 2.25” tall
