Description

This candle holder is made of redware with a brown manganese glaze on the top surfaces. The underside is unglazed, aside for areas where trails of glaze ran down the sides. This piece was thrown on a potter’s wheel by Gottfried Aust.

A number of candle holder sherds were recovered from Aust Waster Dumps #1 and #2. The larger examples indicate Aust was producing only 1 style from 1756 to 1771. None of the recovered pieces suggest a handle was attached.

This particular candle holder was recovered from feature B4, Aust’s Waster Dump #1, which was used between 1760 and 1771. Dark staining to the glaze and clay indicate this piece may have been overfired, and thus discarded.

The bottom and side are marked B4-2-1-5 in black ink.

Dimensions: 4.875” dia., 2.875” tall.
